Champion of the Underworld Slot Review

We have this phenomenon in South Africa where our electricity is cut during certain times of the day to take pressure off the grid. The common name for this occurrence is loadshedding but I prefer to call it Hades.

After all, Hades – or the Underworld, as the Greeks also called it – is associated with darkness and misery, making it the perfect term to sum up what we’ve been feeling since 2008 when these blackouts began.

Let’s settle into Champion of the Underworld slot from Yggdrasil so I can forget about the misery of my life for a few precious moments.

Gameplay

Yggdrasil has crafted a sinister-looking game that’s right up my alley. The reels are filled with spectacularly freakish creatures such as minotaurs, gorgons, many-eyed horses, and other escapees from your nightmares.

The setting looks like a hellish amphitheater with spirits wafting around in the grandstands, cheering the action on. I would’ve loved to tell you what it was like to play this game on my phone, but no matter how many times I tried to load it, it kept bombing out.

If we scratch beneath the surface of Champion of the Underworld slot, we find 4,096 paylines, an RTPRTP stands for “Return to Player.” The RTP describes the total bet amount that a game returns to players over millions of spins, and that figure is represented by a percentage. Table games, such as Roulette, typically have higher RTPs than many slots.

RTP needs to be considered in conjunction with a game’s volatility rate.
of 96%, and a very high volatility rate. The max win isn’t quite in keeping with expectations, as the top prize is “only” good for €200k.

Crypto players will have to go further afield for their jollies, as only fiat currency is accepted in this slot.

Features

Wins happen when you land at least 3 identical symbols on adjacent reels (from left to right). Landing multiple winning symbols on a reel multiplies your wins. Oh, and Wilds replace all regular symbols.

GIGABLOX:

Gigablox are oversized symbols that can get up to 4x4 in size. Any symbol in this game can appear as a Gigablox, and at least 1 is guaranteed to land on each spin.

WILD FIGHT:

When the fight kicks off (randomly during the base game and on every spin during Free Spins), you’ll see old Hades take on the monsters in single combat. Every symbol he defeats turns into a Wild – and that’s true of Gigablox as well.

Each successful battle also adds a +1 multiplier to the progress counter that you’ll see on the right of the grid during Free Spins.

FREE SPINS:

You’ll need to score at least 5 Free Spins symbols to initiate this round. As for the number of spins you’ll get, this is equivalent to the number of Free Spins symbols on the reels (bearing in mind that a 2x2-sized Gigablox = 4 symbols).

GAMBLE:

Once you’ve triggered the Free Spins feature, you’ll be given a chance to gamble for 1 more spin or an additional 7. Or you could opt to take what you have and run with it.

Gambling means you’ll be spirited off to a new screen where you’ll see a bunch of swords pointing inward. Some are broken and some are not – you need to pick one that isn’t damaged once they’re covered and spun around.

You can keep gambling to your heart’s content, but a single loss will see all your Free Spins disappear into the ether.

BUY BONUS:

My favorite feature is being able to buy Free Spins without having to wait (I’m impatient like that). Five spins will cost you 90x your bet, while 20 spins will set you back a massive 1,000x!

Performance

As I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t get this game to load on my phone for love or money. I didn’t have any issues on my laptop though, and I don’t think my phone was at fault as I’d played other slots earlier and didn’t run into problems.

Maximum Win

I feel like the €200,000 top prize is a bit miserly, given the volatility rate. At least you’ll be saved from coughing up horrendous amounts on each spin, as the 10,000x multiplier means the max bet is a manageable €20.

If you’re not into chasing the big bucks, then feel free to start betting at €0.20 or anything up to the cap.

Conclusion

I feel like Yggdrasil could’ve done more with the graphics, as the cartoony look and feel didn’t really blow my kilt up. My other gripe, of course, was the issue I had with loading the game on my phone. I’m hoping that was a once-off glitch and not something persistent.

The max win was a surprise – and not in a good way – but I’d still graciously accept it if it was offered to me.

Feature-wise, Champion of the Underworld slot offers a decent mix. Having the Wild Fights trigger randomly during the base game helps to break up the tedium a little, so that was appreciated.

Overall, this is a decent enough offering but there’s definitely room for improvement.
